Description: Words Work! is an early literacy program, developed by The Saint Paul Foundation, to increase children's literacy skills and improve family involvement. Program funders contributed over $3.3 million dollars to this program, to include funds from The Saint Paul Foundation, F.R. Bigelow Foundation, Mardag Foundation, Katherine B. Andersen Fund of The Saint Paul Foundation, and individual donors. In 2008, the State of Minnesota dedicated $1 million dollars over a two year period to incorporate Words Work elements of success into Head Start programs.

ACET services: ACET has provided evaluation services to Words Work! since 1999. The evaluation included staff training and multi-site analyses that were integrated into program operations. ACET created a data analysis and reporting templates for each Words Work! center that incorporated student demographic data, assessment results, and family inventories. In addition, ACET built various check points for quality control to ensure that student assessment data were entered, analyzed, and reported accurately. As part of the longitudinal evaluation of student progress, ACET analyzed academic test scores using General and Hierarchical Linear Modeling techniques. The longitudinal team has followed Words Work! and comparison group children since 1999 when these children were approximately 4 years of age. Children from the study are now approximately 13 years of age.
